The classical performing arts community is facing a pivotal moment. COVID-19 has placed unprecedented restrictions on public gatherings, with seemingly no relief in sight. This new reality challenges the traditional live approach that relies on patrons physically attending performances in a venue. Shuttered doors = lost revenue.  

Opera On Tap Las Vegas approached StudioKurcan looking for an engaging streaming performance solution. Singers submit pre-recorded performances, and a live host drives interactivity with a Facebook Live streamed show. A broadcast graphics package was developed to support the live show, advertise OOTLV platforms, and provided donation call-to-actions.

As more performances go digital, audience engagement becomes a critical issue. No longer playing to a captive audience, our content must be able to compete with a range of other media and distractions. Studies show that we have only 10 seconds to capture the attention of video audiences. However, if we can attract the audience, they are three times more likely to watch a live stream rather than an archived video. Webcasts compete with a myriad of distractions around our viewer's home, and the vast amount of content available on the web.  StudioKurcan employed broadcast graphics design to assist in capturing and retaining attention. 

Careful thought and planning went into all elements.  Visual identity is matched between the show logo, opening sequence, and introductory lower thirds. Lower thirds graphics are overlaid on the live host shot, and also embedded in singer videos.

Having a visually diverse yet related library of overlay graphics helps to elevate the broadcast, bringing a sense of congruency to the variable nature of having each performer recording their own videos. It is also purposeful for Opera On Tap Las Vegas, with analytical metrics showing an increase in social media and donation traffic in response to the call-to-actions.
